Flowers for Algernon did not really impact me much. I view all people as equal already, mentally disabled people included. My belief is that every person has something to bring to the table regardless of their mental capacity.
I think the authors view on people with mental disabilities is similar to mine. I think that the authors opinion of mentally handicapped is that they are people just like the regular people, they just might not have as much to offer in the intellectual department. Another thing that I think the author might think is that mentally handicapped people may have bigger hearts then regular people. They just are friends with everyone in other words.
The novel took place in the early to mid 1900’s, so the treatment of people with mental disabilities I think has increased. They are counted in society now and not frowned upon because of their handicap, but understood because they couldn’t help a gene mutation or the wrong wiring in the brain. I also think that children who go to school with the mentally impaired now have learned to accept and try to understand why that person acts that way. Or that’s what I have seen from personal experience. A little girl down the road has only half a brain and my little siblings don’t make fun of her and they are nice, whereas in the book it seems to me that Charlie got made fun of and so did his sister growing up.
I agree and disagree with you Katy because of a couple of different points that I would like to address now. I don't exactly agree that everyone is created equal because if we were... we would obviously not have mentally handicap people. On the other hand I do agree with the fact that they can bring something to the table regardless of their mental capabilities. They all have a share in the world, and without them, this world would definitely be a lot different. I also agree with the fact that we are treating mentally handicap people with a lot more respect and maturity. As the world improves, we have a better understanding of the mentally handicap, and we continue to become better people by not making fun of them. They deserve better because most of them can't help that they are mentally impaired because they were born that way, and they don't know the difference.
