Week 2 Post

I think in the book Of Mice and Men the author influences you to feel bad for people with mental disabilities. Throughout the book I felt like George was always saying something mean to Lennie which made you feel bad for him and dislike George a little more. The novel didn’t really affect the way I think about people with mental disabilities. The book only made me feel bad for Lennie because he was given no care or compassion for him disability and was treated as if he were some sort of animal. Obviously he made a big mistake in the novel by killing Curley’s wife, but I think the only reason that happened was because he was put in an unfair situation. Someone with that sort of disability shouldn’t be put into a situation like that. I think since the time of this novel, the way people with mental disabilities are treated has changed. In the old times when this book is set, people with mental disabilities were treated much worse like they were an embarrassment to society or they were I deviant of some sort. Now a day, people know that they were born with the disease and they cannot help what they were given. This being said, we treat them with much more compassion and care due to their illness.

  1. I think Ryan could not have put it any better about Lennie being put in an unfair situation with the fact that people didn’t know about mental sickness back then, and I also agree that George was a little harsh with Lennie through out the book. I bet a lot of people would get frustrated, just like George, to people with a problem like Lennie's. This doesn't make it right and would make me feel bad too. Also I think George was not responsible with Lennie because he was put in a unfair situation, like Ryan said, because there are a lot of things through out the book he cant handle. I should also add that George put a lot of pressure on Lennie by always telling him to stop screwing up. So I’m not surprised that Lennie ended up doing something very bad, it was just a matter of time before something went wrong.
