The author of the book, “Of Mice and Men,” influenced my view on people with mental handicaps as humans that should be watched over like little kids. I think that is what the author’s opinion is about the mentally handicap. I believe this because in the book, George was always having to keep Lennie out of trouble, getting him out of trouble, and taking care of him as a brother. George would always make food for them, find them a place to live and work, and he always had to fill Lennie’s head with stories, dreams, and thoughts of one day owning their own ranch where Lennie can tend the rabbits by himself.
After reading this novel, my thoughts of people that are mentally handicapped have not changed what so ever. I know that it is hard for them to live a normal life everyday and they constantly need attention and help from others in their lives.
Over time the treatment of people with mental disabilities has changed dramatically. Currently in all schools there are programs that help kids who struggle with disabilities. People know that a person with a disability can do something wrong and not completely be there fault because they are like a little kid and did not know better or did not know the right thing to do. Overall the times have changed and people are treated differently now-a-days because more and more people have obtained knowledge about these unfortunate disabilities.
I some what agree with you in saying that the author saying that mentally handicapped people are like little kids, but I do disagree that they should be treated like they are kids. They are people just like everyone that is “normal” just a little slower than the rest. Lennie is a working mentally handicapped person. Meaning that he can work in society, just has to be supervised when he is out and about. And yea George took care of Lennie for the better part of his life but one he told Lennie’s aunt that he will take care of him and they were close to family that they have, so they take care of each other. George was almost like Lennies care taker like mentally handicapped people have today. Is George didn’t take care of him then he would be in a mental institution and that’s no way to live.
