Of Mice and Men should be read in high school because it explains how mentally challenged adults survive in the real world and exposing to high school students that mentally and physically challenged people can do actions anyone could do, most of the time. A lot of people, primarily in high school, seem to make fun of students at school if they have a disability, mentally or physically, even if they pretend to be nice around those students.
Even though Lennie has George to watch after him, he still seems to get in trouble because of his disability to function properly, but he still knows what is right and what is wrong. Lennie knows he can also be a hard worker primarily when he wants to tend the rabbits when they get that ranch after they attain enough money.
I have not read another novel pertaining to disabilities in general, but more of these novels should be recommended to English classes by virtue of understanding the concepts of being helpless. By me saying helpless is that some people with disabilities can not do anything else to be more normal than they are. As a result of this, they can not think of an answer the same way a person without a disability can and they may also not be as quick of a thinker as most people without disabilities can be. What I am trying to say is you need to have a little more patience with them and try to work with them so they can understand a concept they do not understand better and just be polite. That is why I think, Of Mice and Men and other novels with the same perspective should be read in high school.
