I think this is a good novel for high school because it teaches some very
important life lessons. It teaches things like to not look down upon the
mentally challenged, to not judge until you’ve heard the full story, and the
importance of friendship. In the book when George and Slim are talking about
Lennie; you learn that George in the past has treated Lennie pretty badly.
Especially the time when he had Lennie jump in the river, nearly getting Lennie
killed. At this point George realizes that he has gone too far and since then
has tried to take care of Lennie the best he can. And when you are introduced to
Curley’s wife you are immediately told that she is basically a tramp with no
prior knowledge. Although later in the story you begin to see her side. Like
how she because of her mother lost the chance to become a celebrity, and
because of this is now stuck in a loveless marriage. Immediately after telling
her true feelings; she is killed however so she has no chance to act on her
feelings. Throughout the book you begin to see George’s and Lennie’s
relationship and how strong their friendship is. Even though George says that
if Lennie wasn’t there he could do what he wants, he really would be quite
lonely living paycheck to paycheck with no hope of moving on. George in the end
could have just let everyone else kill Lennie but he wanted to put Lennie down
in a way that Lennie wouldn’t spend the last of his life in terror and pain.
