As we finish the novel, think about stereotypes in the novel. What stereotypes were supported? How? What stereotypes were challenged? How?
How does the author influence you to view people with mental handicaps? What is the author's opinion about mentally challenged people? Has the novel affected the way you think about people with mental disabilities? How has the way the people with mental disabilities are treated changed since the time of this novel?
As you read the novel, did you find yourself identifying with any of the characters? In what way? Which characters elicited the strongest reaction from you? Were these positive or negative reactions? Why?
Should this novel be read in high school? Why or why not? Is this novel relevant today? Why or why not? Have you read other novels that deal with similar themes? If so, how are the two works similar or different? Which novel would be better to read in high school?
