Week 2 post, Josh M

The way the book is written, the author shows us that mentally handicap individuals need special attention and are not to be made fun of at any time. After reading the book, I really disliked the guys at the bakery because of how much they made fun of him, and do stupid things and laugh at him. Charlie didn't even realize that they were laughing at him and thought they they were laughing with them. That has influenced me to never make fun of mentally handicap people because I don't know what it is like to be them, and it is wrong. The author is very supportive of helping the mentally handicap, and you could tell writing this kind of story would have been very hard as a writer. There are mentally retarded people in our school, and I now do all that I can to not let them be made fun of, and to help them out in any way possible. I believe mentally retarded people will always be made fun of because there are bad people in the world, but I am very much hoping that the message will get out that it is very tragic that someone is retarded, and we should help them, instead of making them the butt end of a joke.

  1. I completely agree with you Josh. People do just make fun the mentally handicapped people because they are there. It's completely wrong. I didn't like the guys at the bakery either. They were so mean to poor Charlie, and none of the pranks they did were even funny! I think it is awesome that you want to take a stand, and stick up for the mentally disabled. It is very brave! I also think that people should just never make fun of other people in general because everyone’s self esteem lately has been low, and to think of people making fun of people who might not be able to understand is just cruel. I think you should do something to stop it. That would be very admirable. I think that anyone as the butt end of a joke should just get a hug. I know what it feels like to be on that butt end. Do you?

  2. I think you are right too josh. It makes me feel bad when I see people laughing at mentally handicapped people, or physically handicapped people too. We will never know what it is like to be them, but after reading this book I think anyone would feel for Charlie in the situation that he was in. I wrote about the mentally handicapped people in our school in my post and I completely agree with how you feel. Even if they are great people, they will always be made fun of simply because some people are just immature. I try to always go out of my way to talk to people in their situation and be friendly so that they will realize that now everyone in the world is bad. Maybe one day there will be a solution or fix to the problems that they have and no one will have to go through the pain that Charlie did.
