Week 2 Post: Nick Iacobellis

The novel Of Mice and Men was a good book and I believe that it is a good book to read in high school. It should be read in high school because there are many high schoolers that are not aware of some people's disabilities. I believe that this book is a good learning lesson. It is a good lesson because Lennie could teach readers multiple things. One thing is that you never know when a mentally ill person could snap or know how strong they are. In the book, Curley didn't realize how strong Lennie was and Curley eventually angered Lennie and ended up with a broken hand. Another thing that the book taught me is how much a disabled person can cherish things. In the book, Lennie had a deep love for petting soft things and he loved rabbits.

I do believe that this novel is relevant to today even though the time and setting of the book was long ago. In our world today, there are still a ton of people who are mentally ill. This book, like I said above, can provide a very good lesson to those who aren't completely aware of those that are mentally ill.

I have read another novel that has a similar theme. The book, Petey, is very similar because it deals with someone that is very mentally ill and very disabled. I believe both Of Mice and Men and Petey would be good to read in high school because they both deal with things that are very important to know about in life.

  1. I completely agree with Nick, mentally ill people need to be treated differently than normal people. They don't always make the greatest decisions and it's not their fault. Lennie was not given the care that he needed and as a result, he snapped and killed Curley's wife. I think this book can provide a great lesson about how mentally ill people should be treated.
