Flowers For Algernon Blog Post #2

Flowers for Algernon should be read in high school because it brings a new perspective of people with a mental handicap. This novel can help people that pick on those that are handicapped realize the harm that they are actually doing to them. Some people just don't seem to understand that although you may seem different, and have a lower IQ than the average person, you're still a human being. Just because someone with a disability might not be able to understand you, that doesn't mean that they don't understand that they are being treated as though they are inferior. Another reason why Flowers for Algernon should be read in high school is because it shows you what's important in life. After Charlie had the surgery, he was constantly reading, and studying other languages to try to be as smart as he possibly could. What Charlie didn't realize (or didn't really care about), was that the people that liked him because of his kindness and happiness were becoming less comfortable around him because he was more focused on raising his intelligence than anything. Not until Charlie started regressing did he realize that he had screwed up. He finally realized that having a high IQ and constantly trying to become smarter doesn't matter as much as being emotionally developed and being with his friends and loved ones. - Ryan Makinen

  1. i agree because it talks about how people would kill to be normal and live a good life. But also they cant be treated normal because they that special needs and need to be cared for more differently. they can also be very smart too. How? cause mentally disabled people are also smart in there other areas.
