This novel, Flowers for Algernon should be read in high school. This novel gives the reader insight about common issues in today’s society that can be encountered on a day to day basis. This insight can provide to be a very valuable life lesson that can be learned by young adults today that will provide guidance for many years to come. Not only does this novel provide an important life lesson, it also provides us with a chance to somewhat understand how a cognitively or otherwise impaired person feels about life. Without this life lesson the young adults in high school today and in the future might encounter a scenario in life that has the potential for said individual to make potentially regrettable decisions. If this scenario can at all be avoided in life, it should at any reasonable cost be avoided. If simply reading a novel in high school can help young adults avoid making regrettable decisions later in life then that is a novel well worth reading. Furthermore, the novel brings to light human tendencies to dehumanize and mock the individuals on earth that are impaired, weather cognitively or otherwise. If this novel is read in high school maybe a few inspired individuals may find meaning in this story and strive to change the way society views the impaired populous of the future. If a novel has the potential to do so much isn’t it a book worth reading?
