A New View
In the Novel, Of Mice and Men, the author Steinbeck gives me a whole new view on the treatment of mentally challenged individuals. Many mentally challenged people do not always know right from wrong and can make some bad decisions the effect other people. This leads me to the question, should mentally challenged people be treated the same and have the same consequences as a normal human being? I do not believe so. Mentally challenged people should always have someone watching over them and helping them to ensure that they are making good decisions that will not hurt themselves or sometimes even others. I do not think mentally challenged people should have the same consequences as normal people when they commit a crime. That is why they have mental hospitals and institutions. In the novel, Lennie accidently kills Curly's Wife. I do not think Lennie deserved to go free without punishment, but at the same time, I do not think it was right of George to kill Lennie. Even though Lennie made bad decisions I think he was a good person on the inside and he still had the right to live. I enjoyed reading this novel but I did not like the ending.

Peter, I think that you made some great points in your comment. You made some very good statements here. I agree with what you have to say here. You make some very good points. One being, mentally challenged people do not always know the difference between right and wrong. This is very true. To answer your question, I also do not think that mentally challenged individuals should have the same punishments that normal human beings do because they do not know that they are doing something wrong. If they knew that they did something wrong than maybe it would be a different story but unfortunately they do not. Lennie did not want to harm Curley's wife in any ways. He just wanted her to be quiet and not tell George that he killed the puppy. Lennie without a doubt should have been punished to a certain extent but he did not deserve to die at all.
