Week 2! A is for Acceptance/Macy Dalman

I think Flowers for Algernon should definitely be read in high school. This gives kids a chance to think about actually having to deal with a disabled person. Not many of us think about it until we find ourselves surrounded by someone disabled and not knowing how to act. So, I think it's good that we are reading this for everyone to get a little background before we all go off into the real world where we may run into things like this. This novel is so relevent to today because there are a lot of disabled people in this world. We all should know how to react when we approach someone like that. Not to mention, we have some in our school. We all know how they can be so most of us know what to expect and how to act. Personally, I have never read another novel like this one, but I have watched a movie that somewhat relates to Flowers for Algernon. The movie Radio is most similar to this book. Radio is about a boy who is disabled just like Charlie. People treat him inferior to the rest of the world, and aren't accepting to who he is and how he acts. In both the novel and movie, These boys are treated differently then everyone else and aren't accepted by their so called "friends". Instead, their "friends" are just there to make fun of them. They aren't real friends. Either way, Flowers for Algernon or Radio would both be great to read and watch in high school. This gives high schoolers a lesson that you should accept everyone for who and how they are. God created each and every person for a reason. <3

  1. I so agree with you Macy. We did need to read this book and learn how to act around mentally handicap people. Just like you said we encounter different kind of people in our day to day lives where we need to know how to treat them the right way. This book also, makes me think of another movie besides Radio, it is called “A Beautiful Mind”. The movie stars Russell Crowe and it’s about a math genius who looks normal on the outside, but starts to have delusions as a side effect from some medication he was taking. Just like in Radio John’s (Russell) so called friends make fun of him for the things he does because they don’t understand him. Even with some parts of the book being a little out there, it’s still a wonderful book to read for high school students and to prepare us for when we leave high school.

  2. This is Lexi...I agree Macy, I really hate how some people take the disabled for advantage and treat them so terrible. It really hurt me when Gimpy and everyone else would laugh at Charlie and he would think that everyone was just getting along. I believe that everyone, even those who are mentally challenged should be treated equally, and not be discriminated agaisnt. I just hope that someday people will learn to treat everyone with respect.

  3. I totally agree with you Macy. This novel is a good book to read in high school. It can teach many kids who have never been around a mentally handicapped how to act around these individuals. It could prevent people from making fun of these mentally handicapped and even physically handicapped people. These people don’t deserve to be made fun of because it’s sad and this book is a good way to show that all people are human beings even if they are born different. You made a good point that there are mentally handicapped students at our school. There is also a good possibility that they are at other high schools as well. Again, the book helps people realize that they are individuals too.
