Week 2 Of Mice and Men- Courtney Hanneman

In the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck there was alot of sterotypes that i saw. Such as Curley who was the tough guy always trying to beat people up that were in his way or that messed with him but in lennie's case just to beat him up cause Curley didn't like taller/bigger men cause he was small. Another sterotype was Curley's Wife which has the title of being slutty. She is called slutty because she would flirt with all the other men on the farm even when she had a husband.
This novel affects the way I think of people with mental disabilities because when I think of someone with a mental disibility i think of them as being weak, vulnerable, and keep to themselves but this novel changed it because when i saw Lennie he stuck up for George and didn't let people walk around on him, like how he showed Curley up. The author's opinion about mentally challenged people is that they are as tough and strong as us but they just need more help then us. The way people with mental disibilities in the novel has changed since it was published is that now people are more outgoing and speak up and arent afraid unlike Lennie was a little in the novel.
This novel should be read in High School because it teaches kids that just because someone has a disibility wether it be mental, physical etc that they arent just vulnerable and weak that they can speak up for themselves and might shock you on what they can do. It also teaches kids who your friends are. If you have a friend like Lennie and George and stick up for eachother then you have true friends. Thats why this book is important to read in High School.

  1. I completely agree with you that this book should be read in high school, it does have a lot of life lessons. Also, it is so true that your true friends are the ones who are always there for you and stick up for you. I never looked at mentally handicap people the way you did about how they are vulnerable, weak and keep to themselves. I agree with some of that, but I don’t see every one of them as weak or shy. Many mentally handicap people out there are way out going and are trying to better this world. I see them as being strong because they are willing to keep going through the days even though it may be a struggle for them. It takes a lot of courage to go through school and such because many kids aren’t as accepting as they use to be and see them as the odd ball, but many of them are just like us.
