Flowers for Matthew?

Flowers for Algernon
I don't know about you guys but i learned quite a bit from this novel. I learned how mentally handicapped people are just the same as us but they just struggle a little more. In this book you see all of the struggles that Charlie goes/went through on a regular basis, you see his so called "friends" make fun of him and tease him without him knowing. When you see this in the book you feel bad, you get mad and want to stand up for him and if I was there I would have. This book challenges the stereotypes of of mentally handicapped individuals, the author Daniel Keyes wants you to know that people like charlie have feelings too, he wants you to know that you need to be kind and respectful of everyone around you. The way he challenged the stereotypes in this was in a SCI-FI sort of way, he has charlie get a surgery where he becomes more "normal" and he can talk back with the people in his life. When Charlie becomes "normal" there is many bridges he has to cross, he is never happy, the only reason he is not because his mental handicap caused so many problems before, mostly from his parents.
