The author of Flowers for Algernon has certainly changed the way that I view handicapped people. I definitely think that I have always treated people with both mental handicaps and physical handicaps with respect and kindness. However, I definitely think that I now will view and act towards mentally challenged people more personably. I guess that I always kind of thought of them as children and treated them like I would a toddler. But after reading this book, I think I now will treat them like I would any of my other friends.
I think that the author was able to make me think of mentally challenged people through his personable writing. He makes Charlie Gordon a character, that while I cannot really relate to him because I do not have a condition like him, very understandable. Also, the author displayed a lot of emotion in the story, and that made me able to feel for the character
I think that since the time of the novel that conditions and treatment of mentally challenged people has changed a lot. While they were not treated great back in that time period, I feel that nowadays they are treated very well, and people try to make them feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. Even in our own school with our own students, I see everyday students treating special students with kindness and friendliness.
Troy, this is Big Rayn here. Just have to say first off, this is a good post that I agree with each statement, that you pointed out. The other does give the reader a great sense of what it actually feels like to be mentally retarded, and also makes you question the way in which you treat someone who is mentally handicapped. I also agree with how you said that mentally retarded people are treated better now than they were before.
