Week Two JL P.

This novel I feel should be read in high school because it is such an easy read. However the book would not make sense to a freshman because their thought process and that of a senior are two completely different things. Although the freshman would be able to read the book I’m saying that they would not be able to understand the book. For myself it is still fuzzy on the author’s true meaning of the book but I think I have a better grasp now than I would have had three years ago. The novel today is partially relevant in today’s society because it shows the way things used to be and the way that people were treated for being different and because “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” By George Santayana. So one of the themes I suppose is looking at racism and the affects that had on people then and the book does a good job of showing that so that we don’t forget our past at go back to old naive ways. I can honestly say that I have yet to read another book like this one because this book was very off the beaten track, very odd. Well that’s it Peace.

  1. Yeah, that's just what I was thinking JL and I think that's why I liked this book. It wasn't super long like some of the books we've had to read in the past or like books we're going to have to read later this year. The book was kind of hard to understand and I guess that's why we read it this year and not earlier and the authors true meaning is still fuzzy to me too. I see exactly what you mean why you say this book is relevant today, things are always changing and you have to know whats happened in the past so you don’t do the same mistake more than once, but not just with racism but with the rights and understanding of people with mental handicaps too. This book is truly one of a kind I've never even heard or seen of a book like this before.

  2. I agree J.L. This is a good book to read as a senior in high school. I dont think freshman, sophmores or even junior would grasp the true meaning of this book. As you said, most of us in the class still dont understand what the true meaning is. I do feel that this novel is partially relevant to todays society, but I dont know if the meaning of the book was about racism or about not repeating mistakes that you have made in the past. I think it has something to do with people with handicaps. But I can agree with you that this book is very unique and we will probably never read another book like this again. But I did like it because of its length and the easiness of the read.
