In the book, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck gives many examples of stereotypes. Some of the stereotypical characters include George,Lennie,Curley,Crook,Candy and Curley's wife. When we think of migrant workers, like George and Lenny, too often the assumption is that they are not well educated. They will work for low wages. They are on the low end of the social system. During this era, they did not know how to deal with people with mental and physical disabilities. Lennie had a tendency to overreact when he was stressed. People dealt with him out of fear instead of compassion. Curley is a stereotypical boss because he likes to take advantage of people that work under him. He is abusive and cruel to both his workers and his wife. As a black man in the 1930's, Crooks is not allowed to do the same things as the whites. For a example, he cannot play cards with the other guys and he has to sleep with the animals. Candy is an example of the old man who saves his money and loves to spend time with his mut. He is the father/grandfather of the group. Curley's wife's name is never mentioned in the book so we assume that she is not valued as a person. She is so desperate for attention that she talks to everybody on the farm. Sadly, she is viewed as a tramp. Stein Beck's characters tend to fit classic stereotypes including the uneducated migrant worker, the cruel controlling boss, the female victim, the powerless black man, and the elderly father figure.

  1. Chris I totally agree with all the stereotypes that people think of against others like about George not being well educated but he could do a lot of things for having to move around a lot of the times. I don't think that people dealt with Lennie in sort of a fear way but in the sense that hes just like a big kid and you just treat him like normal unless you give him something to be a kid about because he will forget that he is supposed to do his job if he gets distracted and people will yell at him but he wont do anything about it unless he is told to, on accident, or is just really mad. I think Curley's wife is valuable to the story because she is showing an example of how maybe most of the women that live like that on a farm with husbands that work all day and don't have time for them if they are mean and awful like Curley.
