Stereotypes

After reading Of mice and men i began to think how each character in the novel was portrayed. Each character had their own reputation or stigma that traveled with them. As George and Lennie arrived the workers had no background of the kind of people they were. Slim was a character that had a background of a hardworking, leader type of guy. Everyone on the ranch respected Slim for this reason. Even Curley wasn't man enough to stand up to Slim. He was also the type who wouldn't prejudice against anyone. Lennie had a bad mental disability and Slim accepted him for who he was and how hard he worked. Everyone but Curley saw this in Lennie. Curley thought he was just a big dumb guy who couldn't talk for himself. Big guys weren't exactly Curley's choice of workmate.
Stereotypes were also a challenge for all the men on the farm. Curley's wife had many different aspirations for her life than Curley may have known. She wanted to be a successful actress in Hollywood rather than a migrant workers wife who wasn't allowed to talk to any of the men. The men had to stereotype against her thinking that she was a whore and this wasn't the case. She just wanted to talk to someone other than Curley but the workers wouldn't speak. This kind of prejudice made her feel very alone and unable to do what she wants.
