rebel yell

holden is the defintion of a rebeliouse child. he smokes drinks and hell orders a whore to his hotel room that his parent doesnt even know hes at. the reason for holdens rebeliouse nature is because of his parents and his sibilings. His parents never really gave him attention as a kid it was allways with hs brother and sister. they allways just sent him to a boarding school and when he would act out for attention his parents never really lisened to the bad actions an just sent him to another school. theres also no time where he has said that his parents loved him or even opened up to him about issues there very excluded from him.this effects holdens life on a daily basis. This has made him into a very unsocaibale guy that doesnt know how to deal with his emotional problems. like when he just left when he got into the fight with his roomate hhe never said goodbye to anyone didnt apoligize he just left. He also has a hard time in a crowded place he distences him self away from them. The other way it affects his life is that he is very lazy doesnt do anything he doesnt want to do just lazy dazys threw life like know big deal.

holden is probally the most antisocial people ive read about he never goes out and does anything with any one. He always seems to be avoiding people until later on in the book when he trys to call people but he either cant get a hold of them or they dont want to hang out so then they he ends up trying to just talk to werid people like the girl at the bar and the prostitute. he might not have wanted to hang out with people befor becuse of somthing that happend in his past or some thing that happened recently and it made him depresed. there could be alot of different possibliteis. also you can tell he is kind of a weird guy and mybe he has tried making friends in the past and no one liked him because he was so weird. holden is just trying to make friends but now to him it almost seems to late.

Holdens Rebelling!!!!

Holden rebels not only against society but his well-being as well. With society it is mainly when it comes to school because he doesn't put in the effort. To some that would be lack of effort but I see it as rebellion because he has been to multiple schools and hasn't succeed in any of them. At Pency Prep he didn't even try to make up for his lack of effort in his classes, and he knew he was failing too. His rebellion I believe is stating that no school is good enough to teach him, and he doesn't care whether he fails or not. This can be a huge effect on him because what is he learning from this....nothing! He is not going to know anything because he decided not to learn. So how is he suppose to get a job now if he has no learning?! He wanted to show people that he didn't need to learn to be a person, and by doing that he is not going to have a bright future. I believe he is also rebelling against his family as well. Ever since his brother died he keeps comparing himself to Allie, and how smart he was! Same with his other brother who lives in Hollywood. He rebels by trying to prove that he doesn’t need school to be like his brothers, and that he can do it himself. And now that he is out of school he is to afraid to tell his parents what really happened, so by rebelling he screwed up his life.

Those Rebellious Teenagers: Brianne Powers

Holden Caulfield is really rebellious. He never does well in school, he leaves his parents without telling them anything and he does not care about anyone or anything around him. All he does is complain how everyone is a phony; especially actors. Holden rebels against anything he thinks is fake or not true. For example, when he watched Ernie playing the piano, Holden thought Ernie was a phony because after he was done playing, everyone that watched him clapped for him because he played very well. He can also be rebellious by trying to order a drink at a club he goes to, but the waiters can tell he is not old enough to drink so he just orders a coke. When he was getting lonely at his hotel, he wanted someone to talk to, but no one was around usually, so he watched to couple across from his room that was dressing in drag. Especially him being a teenager, it is pretty easy to be rebellious. It is even easier if your parents are not around to tell him what or what not to do which, in his case, is why he can get away with all these shenanigans. The effects that his actions take on him are being lonely and depressed. It just makes society look even worse when someone is not acting like they should be.

Going Crazy?

Holden’s mental instability is his lying and depression. The root to his mental instability I believe is being afraid to show people the real him and his brother’s death. Holden was so close to his brother that when his brother died Holden felt like a part of him died as well. Holden makes sure to act like he doesn’t care about other people, but that’s because he’s afraid if he lets someone in, like he did his brother, they will leave him just like his brother did. Holden lies so people won’t see the real him and have a chance to judge him. He is insecure with himself because of how he sees himself compared to his older brother and younger sister. Holden builds up this wall to keep others out so they won’t compare him to his siblings, but I think he just doesn’t want people to know the real him. The depression make it so he feels lonely all the time, but then when he tries to be friends with someone before they get to know him, he psyches himself out by thinking they will judge him and not want to be friends with him. How the lying and depression affect his life is by making him doubt himself and the other people around him.

Mental Instability By Erin W

Holden has a mental instability that causes him to separate himself from his school, classmates, and his family. His brother died of cancer when he was very young. I think that this causes him to rebel and disclose himself from society. The roots to his problems cause him not to talk to people, go to football games, and he has trouble confronting his peers. When stradlander asks him to do his homework, he just does it. Instead of sticking up for himself he just does his essay for him without a complaint. There is this girl names Jayne that he has a crush on. He has a hard time trying to confronting her and other people. When he moves to New York he doesnt want to know people and does want to talk to them. He is not a normal teenage kid. Normal kids want to go socialize and be with friends. Holden , on the other hand, doesnt want any confrontation. This is sad because he should enjoy his younger years and want to become part of society. His mental Instability causes these problems andI do not think it is fair. so im going to conclude with saying his instability causes him to be anti-social.

Week 5, Troy Schott

I think that an important theme in The Catcher in the Rye is Holden’s rebellion against society and social norms. Holden rebels against being a normal kid. He doesn’t go to the football game, he doesn’t make friends. I think he acts this way because he is insecure. He is always lying about things for no apparent reason, and he often plays himself up to be “cooler” than he is. An example of this would be when he admits to being a virgin, but then he quickly qualifies him admitting to that by saying how close he has gotten so many times. He can never just be himself. Also, he is very critical of everyone else. I do not think he is comfortable with himself so he feels the need to break down other people. The effect that this has on him is that he becomes even lonelier and more insecure. He hates to be alone after he gets into New York. However, I don’t think that his actions have a great effect on society. By him rebelling against society and being anti-social, he isn’t a part of other’s lives and therefore he never really affects them in any way.
