Comparable Book of Choice

My novel of choice is called The Color of Light. It is about a newly divorced woman, Jillian Parrish, that is about to have her second child and seeks refuge to the South Carolina island community where she went in the summertime during her childhood. As a child her parents fought a lot and she is haunted by it. It sort of connects to Flowers for Algernon because he recollects about his childhood and how his mom would always beat him when he would do something he is not suppose to. Also in The Color of Light, Jillian’s’ best friend, Lauren, disappeared and they never knew where she disappeared to. Her first child Grace, though, starts to talk to an imaginary friend and its’ name is Lauren, which then reveals information that will change the lives of the island’s inhabitants. I think this book relates to the three books we have already read in many different ways for example family problems, friendship and loss. Also this book has a little bit of romantic relationships in it to for example in The Catcher in the Rye where Holden loved Jane most of all and then all of the other girls he met. In Flowers for Algernon, it was like Charlie and Miss Kinnian. Finally in Of Mice and Men it was Curley’s Wife that had everyone’s attention.

  1. The Color of Light sounds very interesting Brianne! From what I can infer from your summarization, it is a mystery, spiritual, or supernatural novel.
If Grace is somehow speaking to Lauren telepathically, or viewing her ghost, a relation could be drawn between her and Charlie. Charlie underwent radical brain surgery that left him seemingly having had experienced a supernatural increase in intelligence to those who did not know what had happened to him. Seeing as Grace suddenly creates an imaginary friend named Lauren and divulges knowledge of her predicament could be the result of some leap in a spiritual or metaphysical ability.
A more likely assumption would be that Grace observed what befell Lauren, and is subconsciously suppressing mentally harmful information; instead releasing it though the guise of an imaginary friend. This event would then relate perfectly with Charlie Gordon from Flowers for Algernon, in that the restrained memories of his mother’s abusive behavior towards him were released slowly and subconsciously through his dreams.
I hope you enjoy your book!

still be ok in the world many people have to grow up early but I do agree
that he skipped them himself. He needs to find out what he wants out of
his life that is true. But not all people are like holden I mean for a
good couple of years I had to take care of my self-pay my own bills but I
turned out fine. I hope you don’t have to hard of a time transitioning
over to paying for stuff yourself. It’s not that bad yo almost get a
feeling of self-worth when you pay for your own lace food and other
supplies. Keep your chin up and make sure you know what you want and go
    for it. Deuces.
