Week 4, Tyler E

The books Flowers for Algernon and Of Mice and Men were both similar with how they had mentally handicapped people as the main characters, but other than that the books weren’t very similar. Of Flowers for Algernon and Of Mice and Men, I liked Of Mice and Men more, because it was shorter and therefore we had less reading to do a night. I also felt that it was more interesting, especially at the end of the books. At the end of Of Mice and Men, Lennie kills Curley’s wife and then a man hunt peruses where at the end of Flowers for Algernon, Charlie just reverts to his old self and that’s about it. With both characters being mentally handicapped you can compare their intelligence and society’s expectations of the men. To me it seems that Charlie is a quite a bit smarter than Lennie, because when Charlie was at his dumbest he was still able to function in society and he didn’t get in trouble, where when Lennie was left on his own he got in trouble all the time and he was unable to function in society unless George was right by his side watching him constantly all the time.

  1. Hey Ty Rick I would agree with you that for the most part the two novels are extremely different. However I did not enjoy Of Mice and Men as much as i did Flowers for Algernon. I enjoyed Flowers for Algernon much more because I felt that the characters were much more likable than they were in Of Mice and Men as well as the book, to me actually had a meaning and I did not feel that in the first book we read. I agree with you that on there own Charlie would be much more better off on his own than would Lennie. I feel that it shows the mental capability gap between Charlie and Lennie where Charlie can live on his own where Lennie does not have a snowball's chance in hell of being able to make it on his own he would certainly die or be killed by some one that he upset well I'll see you in class.

  2. the are similar in that that they are both mentally handycaped, but i disgree with you flowers for algernon was a lot beter than of mice and men. of mice and men lenny dies at the end and also he is stupeid through out the book. but in flowers for algernon charlie gets smarter as it goes on. the thing is that it has an all around better story line i belive. also in flowers the book is always changing and has alot more action and suspence in it. I think flowers for algernon is just an all around better book than of mice and men.

  3. Tyler, I definitely agree with you in saying that it was nice to have shorter reading at nights, but I still did like Flowers for Algernon better. Even though Charlie does revert back to his old self, we get to know Charlie much better throughout the book. I agree with you in saying the Of Mice and Men did have a more exciting ending as well. You said that Charlie seemed smarter than Lennie was, and I think that's true too, because Charlie could handle himself when he was on his own, and didn't need a caretaker to watch over him 24/7, like Lennie did.
