week 3
I think power was a large key in the novel Flowers for Algernon. In the beginning of the book, Charlie is not smart and has very little power. Nemur, Charlie's doctor, used his power to give Charlie Power. This was an extremely dangerous operation where Charlie was being used as sort of a test dummy for Nemur. Nemur had power over Charlie because he was very intelligent and Charlie believed everything he said. Once the operation on Charlie was finished and successful, he himself began to gain more power. He did this by becoming very smart, much smarter than most of the people he was surrounded by. As Charlie became smarter he also started to gain more respect from the people around him. Before the surgery many looked at him as less than an average human being because he was mentally challenged. Once he became smarter, people began to look at him as more of a human being and because of this Charlie had more power. Unfortunately for Charlie, he mentally regressed at the end of the book. As he lost his intelligence, he also lost his power. Intelligence is Power!
