Week two post

In the book Of Mice and Men , Lennie was considered to be mentally challenged. Everyone figured out that he was a little slow and they treated him that way. Even though Lennie was capable of doing work the same as the other men many characters in the book didn't respect his differences. When Lennie was talking with Crooks, Crooks was saying to him that he didn't understand a word he was saying. He would laugh at him and pretend that he cared about what Lennie had to say. Curly was also an instigator of treating Lennie poorly. Curly was three times as small as Lennie, but because Lennie was mentally challenged he thought he was an easy target. He talked bad to Lennie all the time, and even started to beat up on him. He thought that Lennie wouldn't fight back, but he soon learned that he was very strong. Curly's wife on the other hand treated Lennie normal. She would want to talk to him just as she would any other guy. She was nice to him when she knew he had a few mental problems. She was one of the few understanding and caring people in this book. I think she trusted Lennie a little too much though, because Lennie ends up killing her. It wasn't her fault that she didn't know he would freak out and use his strenth to try and calm her down. But, Lennie didn't know any better. George treats Lennie alittle better than others who don't know him as well. Although, he doesn't have much patients for him. If you want to put yourself around people with mental disabilities patients is the key thing you need. In today's society I would say poeple are more understanding, and know better than to make fun of those who have disablitlies. Back then, people like Lennie weren't treated normally. Today, mentally disabled poeple attend school with the other kids and are hired in jobs. They aren't treated that differently, because we understand now that they are just like every other person on this planet.

  1. Martha, I agree with you that Curley attempted to take advantage of Lennie because he was slow and he believed that size would not matter cause he thought he would never be smart enough to fight back. I think in this book it shows how people who had disabilities get taken advantage of. George can pretty much just give Lennie and order and it will be done most of the time if Lennie remembers what he is suppose to do. People back in this day did not know of these conditions that people had where they were not mentally tough and I also believe that people mistreated Lennie because of his stupidity accept for George because he treats him well and always looks out for him like he was actually part of his family.
