In the novel, Of Mice and Men it’s very clear to be able to identify who has voice. The person we hear most from in the novel would be George, because he does a lot of explaining to the readers about why things the way they are and what’s happening. He also explains a lot for Lennie, who he has a lot of power and control over. George does have a lot of the power in the novel because he is the one leading Lennie and himself to success so that they can own their own ranch and have their own property someday. I think that Curley likes to think that he has a lot of power because his dad owns the ranch that Lennie and George work on, but in reality he doesn’t. I think Curley is really insecure about himself and tries to make others feel intimidated by him so he can feel powerful. After Lennie broke his hand when Curley tried to fight him, I think that it was a wakeup call for him to realize that he shouldn’t have underestimated his abilities. So far in this novel there hasn’t been much of a race issue, besides Crooks because he’s the only African American and it’s during the great depression era so there is still a lot of racism going on. Gender is kind of a big deal, because there’s a lot of the “men do all the work” the women don’t and this shows because Curley’s wife is all pretty and done up all the time being flirty and sketchy. Lastly, class is important in this novel because it has to do with power and that also has to do with property and land. This is why it’s so important to Goerge to get his own property and also why Curley thinks that he has so much power!
I agree with you, Audrey, on George having a voice. It is very clear Lennie does whatever George tells him to do, no matter what. George once said that he could tell Lennie to jump off a cliff, and he would. This is a clear message to how much of a voice George really does have. Without George I have no idea what Lennie would do. Lennie relies on everything that George says, and everything that George does. Without George, Lennie would have never broken Curly's hand because George was the one telling Lennie to fight back. Curly wanted to act like a tough guy, and show everyone who is boss, and show them that he has a voice and is not to be messed with. After the fight, Curly has lost all credibility and voice. Curly has also lost a lot of power, after the fight, even though he is the boss's son.
