Of mice and men week 3
I don't think Lenny and George have a voice in this novel because they do not own the property they are working on. They have a voice in their group of friends, which isn't much. Without too much voice they don't have to much power either. They only have power in certain situations, but they really want to get their own farm and work on their own time and hours. Someone who doesn't have any say in anything is Crooks. He does not have much say because he is black, and if he talks, or gives an opinion about anything, it could come back to hurt him. This gives Crooks almost no power at all, and he also barely even has friends. He only talks to Lenny and Candy for a little bit, but that is about all. Curly probably has the most power out of anyone because his family is the family that owns all the property. If any kind of situation happens, Curly has the power to decide if he should tell his dad about it. For example, the confrontation between Lenny and Curly could have resulted in people getting fired. Curly decided to keep his mouth shut for the good of the workers, but he easily could have done the opposite, which was rat on them.

I’m going to have to disagree with you, Josh about George not having a voice. He may not have a voice because he doesn’t own the land, but he has a voice over Lennie. George has a voice over Lennie because he is always controlling what Lennie does or says. Also, George has a lot of power. His power is just over Lennie and making sure Lennie knows what George wants him to do. I do agree with you about Crooks. He doesn’t have much of a voice is because of the color of his skin. Crooks doesn’t have a lot of friends because he’s black, but also because he doesn’t make it easy for people to talk to him. I also, agree with you about Curly having the most power because his family owns the farm, but he didn’t tell about his confrontation with Lennie because he didn’t want to seem weak. Curly always talks a big game and if people found out he got beat it would ruin his reputation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Josh, because it seems like in this time period, the most important thing in life comes down to land, and how much of it you own. Without land, you are basically a nobody, which is George and Lennie.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I agree with you about is Crooks, because you are right in saying that he doesn't have a voice because he is black. Since Crooks has to sleep in a separate bunk from all of his white coworkers, it makes it much more difficult for him to be friends them.
You said that Curley has the most power of anyone on the ranch, which is true because since he is the owner's son, he is able to boss the workers around, and if they do anything wrong, he can tell his father about it to get them in trouble.
I agree that Lenny and George don’t have a voice in this novel because they aren’t the owners of the property and they aren’t the bosses at there work. I also agree that they have just a voice with there friends. I also agree that they have little power in this novel. I agree greatly that Crook has no power at all because this book is set back then and back then black people weren’t listened to or did they have power. This is why Crooks wants to go live with George and Lenny when they get there own farm because they don’t discriminate against him. Also they treat him like the other guys, I also agree that Curly has the most power because hes dad owns the farm. Also agree that Curly can get anyone fired thus giving him way more power than anybody on the whole Farm/ ranch.
