Ryan Makinen Week 3 Of Mice and Men

In Of Mice and Men, the characters that are heard more are those who have more power. Lennie isn't heard as well as the others because he has a mild mental disability, and he doesnt know as much about what is going on. He also gets picked on by Curley because he is a big, easy target for him. George has a fair amount of power because unlike Lennie, he understands what they're doing there, and he has goals in mind. But, both George and Lennie don't have any power on the ranch. On the other hand, Curley lives on the ranch because his dad is the owner, so he has more power. Curley seems to want the most power because he is constantly trying to prove himself. He doesn't like Lennie because Lennie's bigger than him, so he tries to show his power by fighting him. Although Lennie might not have as much power on the ranch as Curley, he is capable of defending himself, and he showed it by breaking Curley's hand. Lennie and George are two of the characters who have the least amount of power. This affects them because they are uncertain if they will have a permanent job at the ranch. They can get kicked out at any time, and they will be back on the run again, looking for a new place to live and work.

  1. Thanks mac attack
this opened my eyes a little bit. i didnt really think of the book in that way or even notice how much each person would or wouldnt talk. i dont think that it is really that easy for them to be kicked off the ranch though because i dont think curley would tell anyone about why his hand is broken or how it got that way

  2. Ryan i definitely agree with you man.
In this book there is a serious power struggle. I didnt view the power struggle this way before i read your post. I think that curlie only seems as if he needs power because he as small man syndrome. I think that it showed a serious flaw in curly when he agreed not to tell about the hand, it really changed my perspective on him, and i was a little confused.

  3. I agree. I didn't realize the power struggle until I read this. Curley is very power hungry because of his size. That is one reason he has so much power. When Curley gets his hand broken by Lennie he did not want anyone to know about it because people would look at him as less powerful if they knew what really happened.

  4. Ryan I think your completely right about charly is a lab rat in this
book. Hegains the power threw the book but doesn’t gain all of it because
of doctor Nemur. But the one thing I disagree with you with is the doctor
should have all the power I don’t think he should have all the power just
because he made charly smart. He should be proud of charly for being smart
but if he surpasses the doctor then its kinda like charly should take
    over control of the experament.
