In the book Flowers for Algernon, Charlie has been denied his voice throughout the book. Even though the story is told by Charlie and from what he writes down, as a kid and before his surgery he has not been allowed to have a voice. He was never asked his opinion as a child and was never allowed to express what he wanted. His disabilities limited him to what was going on around him. He couldnt stand up to his parents, especially his mother because he was too afraid. His father didnt really have a voice either because he couldnt stand up to his wife and tell her to stop treating her one and only son like he is less than human.
Haha there’s no way that is 200-300 words, I don’t agree with you though about how Charlie does not have that much of a voice in this book. I feel that Charlie has more of a voice than your giving him credit for though, because the book is told from his perspective and its his take on every thing. No one is even close to having the same amount of influence on this book though voice as Charlie has on the book, because its how he feels about things that happen to him and what people say to him. Its written in a journal format so that means his voice only. I can understand what you say though because he doesn’t really have a voice in society, because he’s a retard and he cant really express his feeling and thoughts to society. p.s. your post is only 122 words hahaha
ReplyDeleteI agree keifer. Charlie really never had any input on anything. The only thing that he could say yes to was having the surgery and that was when he didn't even know the details of having the operation. Charlie became very smart but still did not have much say in things. A good example is when Charlie and Algernon went to that convention. The doctors pretty much controlled whatever Charlie and Algernon did until Charlie finally made a move for himself and freed Algernon and then caught him and the both of them escaped and went to New York. Then Charlie had the smartness from the operation slowly start to fade away and things eventually went back to how they were. Once again Charlie didn't have any say in anything because of his mental condition. This really shows that Charlie didn't really have a say while he was smart or dumb.
