Week 3 Post: VOICE

In the book Flowers for Algernon, there are a great variety of people that have a very powerful voice within the book. Although Charlie, in my opinion is not one of those people. It started out when he was mentally retarded early on in the book. Nobody really took Charlie seriously and he was made fun of a lot of the time whenever he tried talking or giving his input on something. This was especially happening in the bakery wear he worked. His fellow workers would listen to him but they would always end up taking advantage of Charlie and they would make fun of him all of the time. They all thought it was super funny because Charlie didn't know what was happening. Then as the book goes on, Charlie has his operation and he gradually becomes smarter and smarter as every day passes. He gain a ton of knowledge but still his voice is not very strong. Anything that Charlie said was either too much for another person too handle or something that they didn't want to hear. Also, Charlie didn't really have any input when the he discussed some things with the doctors. Charlie really doesn't have a strong and powerful voice in this book. I believe that the people with the voice and the doctors, Alice, and most of the other people that are around Charlie.

  1. I agree that there are a lot of people in this book who have a voice, Charlie is definitely not one of those characters. I believe that the most powerful character is probably Charlie's mother. She was a big part in his life when he was a kid. She was very vocal in telling him that she hated him and how he was. I kind of believe that thats why Charlie is the way he is now. He never got the acceptance and love from his mother that he needed. She sort of made him the way he is now. I agree that Charlie didnt really know what was going on around him before he had the surgery. He was unable to defend himself and speakout against people making fun of him because he did not know what was happening. But after he had the surgery his voice did become a little bigger.
