Week 3 Post

Power in the novel Flowers for Algernon play a big role in how this book plays out. I think that there a few characters that have all the power. In the lab, Nemur has all the power because he was the author of the whole experiment and he feels like Charlie is his guinea pig. Nemur feels like is the entire reason that Charlie is the way he is and that makes him feel like he deserves all the power. On the other hand, Charlie does not have any power in the lab in the beginning of the book. He starts out as an insignificant person just being used to test a procedure that may or may not work. Near the end of the book though, Charlie gains some power. He decides that he could be a big help for the group in the lab by doing some research of his own. I think that this gains Charlie some power in the book because it shows that he has grown into a person of his own and he shows Nemur that he doesn't need him constantly telling people that Charlie is a guinea pig that he "created". In the end, the power in this book effects how certain characters treat others. For example, when Charlie gained power near the end of the novel, I think Nemur realizes that Charlie deserves to be treated more as a human and not just a test subject.

  1. Ryan, I agree with you one hundred percent that power plays a key role in this book. With Nemur knowing all about the experiment and the procedures Charlie has no power in telling him what he can and cant do and how to do it. But as Charlie becomes smarter he realizes he is just an experiment and he deserves to be treated better. After Charlie saw the bus boy get made fun of it reminded it of how he used to be treated and I think this shows that the more power is with the smarter or brighter people in the world because they are more respected or feared.

  2. Ryan I think your completely right about charly is a lab rat in this
book. Hegains the power threw the book but doesn’t gain all of it because
of doctor Nemur. But the one thing I disagree with you with is the doctor
should have all the power I don’t think he should have all the power just
because he made charly smart. He should be proud of charly for being smart
but if he surpasses the doctor then its kinda like charly should take
    over control of the experament.
