Week 4 Post

I liked both of the books. But if I had to choose the one I liked better, I would choose Flowers for Algernon. At first I didn’t like it as much because it was harder to read. But as it went on, I felt like I became more and more interested in the book. I think the ending to Of Mice and Men was much more interesting. But, overall the book Flowers for Algernon has a better plot. In my opinion, both the books say that intelligence is overrated. In Flowers for Algernon, Charlie becomes a legal genius, but still feels like a part of him is missing. In the book Of Mice and Men, Lennie shows that he is just as able to work as all the other fully abled people. It shows that the expectations of people have gotten higher. In both books, the characters are looked down upon due to their mental illness. Both lead to sad endings as well. But, ironically, both of the endings were somewhat relieving. It was relieving that Lennie didn’t have to deal with people making fun of him and taking advantage of him to get him in trouble anymore. Also, Charlie went back to his old self where he had actually friends and relationships rather than the way he was after the procedure.

  1. I agree with you on liking flowers for algernon better. It is just a better book in general. A better read. did you like the ending to Of mice and men? or just think it is interesting? you say charlie went back to his old self where he actually had friends and relationships, but did he really? or were they just as fake as they were the first time? because that's how i feel, i feel as if nothing got accomplished in Flowers for algernon because the book basically ended the way it started. Did you become sad when either Lennie died or when Charlie's intelligence regressed? Did you learn any life lessons in either of these novels? I did, do not judge people and just realize what you are doing if you are being mean or disrespectful. Didn't you feel good when you saw Lennie lifting the heavy things two times better than everyone else?

  2. Weebsss. I agree, if I had to pick which one i liked better I would pick Flowers For Algernon as well. I also agree with you about not liking the book at first. I really did not like the book at first because it was so hard to understand his writing and it took forever to read. Once he got smart, I could actually understand the things that he was saying and it actually made me kind of enjoy the book. Of Mice and Men was just really short and it just didn't really do all that great of a job holding my attention. I found myself wondering off quite a bit while i was reading that book. This book was more interesting to say the least because of all of the things that were going on in Charlie's life. Overall, I agree and I also think that Flowers for Algernon was the better books of the two.
