Week Post 4
Personally I would have to say I enjoyed Flowers for Algernon more then Of Mice and Men. This is because in Flowers we were able to get to really know Charlie in a way that wasnt as apparent in Mice and Men. While it does help that Floweres was longer so naturally you get more info, you get to really know Charlie when his world basically flips upside down. There was no dramatic change that gave Mice and Men its story. However with Flowers we went from a simple minded Charlie who could only read and write on a really basic to level, to a Charlie who learned twenty languages, wrote a paper about the expirement and in the end reverting back to his previous state. In Mice and Men Lennie was always simple minded and you never got to see him experience anything like Lenie did. So while both were exceptional novels, Flowers for Algernon won my vote on what was best.

Hi Damion I have to agree with your choice of flowers to algernon over mice and men. I liked flowers better because it was a quicker read and was interesting to see how charlie evolved throw out the book. I also believe that it nice to see how Charlie is before and after his surgery. It was also interesting to see how charlie becomes more matures a person as he becomes more intelligent. I agree with your idea of Lennie being simple minded because he doesn't have the same opportunities that Charlie had to get the surgery. I thing that if Lennie had the choice to get the surgery to become smart that he would. What do you think he would do. Also do you think that they will ever have a surgery like they did in Flowers For Algernon.
ReplyDeleteI also agree Damien. I like how you support your opinion by stating that Charlie simply had more exciting things happen to him than did Lennie. I also found this to be a reason I enjoyed Flowers for Algernon better. The plot was more rich. I found it more intriguing to see someone go from a mentally challenged state to a thriving genius. I felt that Of Mice and Men entertained the read by having more of an “action-packed” plot. The storyline progressed quickly and there were a lot more plot twists than in Flowers For Algernon. However, the plot of Flowers for Algernon, to me, had more substance and the Characters were more interesting. Both books were a great read and I’m glad I read them.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I did not realize that point. I did more easily relate to Charlie from flower than I did from lennie from of mice and men. Although I dis agree. There was a very big filp of the story line in of mice and men. How about when lennie killed curlie’s wife or maybe when George pulls out the gun and shoots lennie in the back of the head. I feel that is a big plot twist. Granted it may have happened late in the story it still happened and was un expected. I don’t feel that the change in charlies intelagents was that split second. It may have been fast but not that fast that we could not fallow it. Finaly the reson why you never see that is because lennie never really wanted to change. He was fine with what he had
ReplyDeleteI agree with you I like the book flowers for algernon more then of mice
ReplyDeleteand men. I don’t agree that flowers was a quicker read then of mice and
men but I thought it went faster then of mice and men because it was
funneir to read. I thought that the mentally handycap were both partrayed
the same exepted for the fact that they whated 2 dfferent things.
