the character holden from the catcher in the rye rebels against conformity. he contintues to call everyone around him who has similarities with each other phony's and makes everyone think he is someone they would not want to try to get to know either and think that holden doesnt care, so they dont bother trying to let im fall in with them or the people around them. refusing makes making friends one of the hardest things that holden does. because he is so critical of what the other people are doing he makes it close to impossible to have relationships with them. including his own parents.he thinks that going to games in school, or movies in groups or movies at all, he called them phony for pretty much anything they did so how could any one ever not be considered phony, or real, or good enough for him to make a friend to have someone close to him to help with his problems, weather its the problems he has with his parents, or the loss of his brother, or even his spinning our of control and not bein able to stop it. he him self is making life in this society close to nothing because of his lack of conformity or even the closest effort to trying.
