everyone has to grow up. for this statement obviously i would relate it to holden.. i would say that yes he went through some things like not being able to connect with other people in the novel, and he lost his little brother to a horrible disease, and cant find a relationship with his parents, but everyone has things go wrong in their life and they have to learn from them, not sulk about it for the rest of their life. what doesnt kill us makes us stronger. i think that statement is kinda true. it makes it harder to be hurt as much in the next time the situation happens. its kinda like you become a little more numb each time. so in holdens case when he cant find the right kind of relationship or at least the one he wants, he should try to appreciate the one he does have with them and his sister. and when his brother dies, yeah of couse he will miss him but he should think about all the good times they had together. this way he would think of his life as a happy memory not just one that depresses him so that he holds back and doesnt try to get close to anyone else including class mates and other people he meets on the street.
