Week 4, Tyler P
I enjoyed both of the novels, but of the two, I liked Of Mice and Men better. I could easily relate to the characters and the situations they faced. The book was easier to read and comprehend. While George and Lennie traveled without any guidance to where they should be going, they find themselves working for a temperamental farm owner named Curley. Curley set expectations for all of the workers on the farm and especially for the new guys, George and Lennie. As the year went on George and Lennie abided by Curley's guidelines. Society placed an importance on Lennie and George's work ethic and how they succeeded. Back then, society placed a greater importance on hard work. Now a days people are told if you want something: go and get it. George and Lennie tried to do this as best as they could keeping their dreams in mind. The characters exhibit the authors message about intelligence in an effective way. Lennie, who was less capable of retaining knowledge excelled as a hard worker. George had the power and control of both of their situations, and ultimately George chose to end Lennie's life in order to save him form the cruelty he would've faced against Curley. George limits his intelligence by letting go of his common sense and tuning into his heart. He loved and cared for Lennie, and this was shown throughout the novel.
