Week 7, Troy Schott

For my novel of choice, I selected I am Legend by Richard Matheson. I chose this book because the movie was really good. Will Smith's one of my favorite actor so that I'm sure was part of the reason I really like the movie, but also I thought the story line was really interesting. Anyway, the book is about a man named Robert Neville. Based in the late 40’s (at the time the novel was written), the novel takes place in a world where vampires have all but destroyed mankind. Robert Neville is a lone man in a giant world, as he is the only person who has not been turned into a vampire in the novel. The connection of this novel to the novel’s we read are mostly about the loneliness experiences by those characters. In particular, Robert Neville is almost the exact opposite of Holden Caulfield. Holden is an insane person living in a world of sane people, and he is lonely because he wants human interaction but pushes it away every time it is available. Robert Neville is exactly the opposite. While he is lonely, he fiends for interaction with others, but he has no opportunity for it. He even thinks of joining the vampires because of his extreme loneliness.

  1. What's up Troy.
You made some good connections to the novel, wow, after I read them again I realized exactly how good they actually were. Compliments to your connections. I didn't even realize that Holden Caulfield's situation was the opposite of Robert Neville's situation, but yet they are still similar because they are both coping with loneliness and isolation. Again, wow, Right now I'm sitting at my computer speechless and don't even know what to type. The situations differ because Holden Caulfield brings it upon himself and Robert Neville has no choise but to embrace isolation and make the best of it. The other connection I made was that Holden is coping with the death of his brother, Allie. In contrast, Robert Neville is coping with the death of his wife, Virgina, and his daughter, Kathy. You can also make the stretch connection that Neville relates to Curley's Wife in Of Mice and Men, because they both deal with isolation.
