Jake Whitney Week 3
The people who are heard in Of Mice and Men are the ones that metaphorically yell the loudest; Curley yells with his ego and fists, Slim because he is the head ranch hand and George because he always stands up for Lennie. The people who are less heard are Crooks because he is a negro, Curly's wife because she is lonely and Curly never lets her talk to anyone because he is suspicious, and Lennie because he doesn't know how to communicate his thoughts. There is a pretty small class structure in Of Mice and Men and it is entirely based on senority. At the top class is the owner, and the Curly, who is the owners son. Just down the rung is Slim and Candie who have been at the ranch for a while and know the ropes. After them comes Curly's wife who just floats around and flirts because she is lonely. Then comes George and Lennie because they new guys. Finally is Crooks who is at the bottom because he is a negro. Voice and class are very interconnected in this novel because there are very few characters so they all have their own place in the 'society' there.
