Holden is a rebel!!!
In this book I feel like Holden acts very much like a rebel. He wants to go against everything a boy his age should do. He flunks out of every school he is sent to. The reason for this is because he is rebelling against his parents. He feels like there is no point in trying because he will never be as good as his older brother no matter how hard he tries. So why not be the black sheep of the family? Holden smokes at Pencey even when your not supposed to. He couldn't care less if he got in trouble for it though because he knew he was getting kicked out anyway. He goes to New York to go home by himself, and while he is there he acts like a grown man. Going to bars and hiring prostitutes isn't something a 16 year old should be doing. Society is telling him he needs to stay in school and get good grades to become a successful man, very much like his brother did. But Holden doesn't think that's the right thing for him to do. He will just keep getting kicked out of school and getting himself into trouble until he finally learns the place where he belongs. Holden's way of growing up is to try and rebel what society is telling every 16 year old to do. By doing so he will learn a lot along the way and actually maybe learn more than he would if he stayed in school and actually tried. It's hard for someone to do that though when they know they will just disappoint the important people in their life anyways. Holden sees no sense in being a normal teenager. His parents and teachers try and force everything on him, when all he wants to do is stay young and free. He doesn't want to have the stress of becoming successful, so he takes the easy way out.

I never really thought of Holden as being a rebel, I always just thought he acted the way he did was because he was so mentally unstable. After reading how you felt about him and seeing it in the perspective of him being a rebel, it really does make sense and could the way he acts could just be because he’s a rebel and wants to do whatever he wants and not listen to other people and stay young and free. I don't think that he realizes that the way he is acting now is affecting his future and he needs to change and fix things before its too late. You're right, he tries to take the easy way out all of the time in life but really its not going to be as easy as he thinks in the end!
ReplyDeleteMartha, I know we're not suppose to start out with "I agree" anymore but really do agree with everything that you said here. Holden definitely acts out because of the lack of parental influence in his life. He never had anyone to guide him and put him on the right path to success. You can tell by the way Holden speaks about his brother that he resents him, I believe that it is partially due to the fact that his brother has completely lost all sense of innocence that he ever had. Also that is why I believe that Holden speaks so highly and well about his younger sister, because she is at a stage in her life where she is completely innocent. Since Holden is in the process of losing his innocence he wants to hold on to his sister's innocence for as long as possible. Holden's reasons for hiring prostitutes and drinking are all explained by him just not having someone to push him in the right direction.
