It’s obvious that Holden faces problems with being mentally instable. It shows in the way that he acts himself and the way he acts towards others. Towards the beginning of the book we learn that his brother died from leukemia and he was really close to him. Losing his brother like that was really hard on him and changed him. Another reason why Holden is so unstable is because of his parents. They aren’t really supportive of him and they don’t really treat him like a son. Since their other kids were very successful and managed to achieve a lot in life, he has a lot of pressure on him to be the same way. Since Holden doesn’t really care about anything anymore, he doesn’t have any self motivation or determination to be as successful as his siblings. It doesn’t help when he doesn’t have any support or anyone there for him to help guide him and encourage him to make something of himself. Facing these problems has clearly affected Holden and the way he acts and the things he does for himself in his life. If Holden wants to get his life back on track and be a happier person and more stable I think he should figure things out with his family, and get help to be where he needs to be so he can be successful.
Beats in the building!! Holden’s parents didn’t really act like parents by sending him to boarding schools even when he didn’t like them; it was an escape route in my opinion. It’s like they didn’t like him but spending him too boarding schools they could say he is getting the best education. In my opinion Holden is a waste of air on this planet. He never gets the message like grow up honestly. I get that I don’t do that well in school and when i am failing a class i get the worst pit in my stomach and i start to study more and focus in class. Holden obviously doesn’t care what his grades are. Plus I care about what teachers think about me too and I’m failing i feel like they hate me. It’s awkward sitting in a class with a teacher that hates you. Personally Holden is immature as and he wants attention so bad but won’t admit it, when someone goes about life like he does they are starving for attention. Holden is going to grow up to be a felon because he will never grow up and get with reality that life gets no way without effort.
ReplyDeleteAudrey, you are definitely right in saying that Holden's brother dying when he was younger contributes to his mental instability, but I think the biggest reason is his parents. The way they parent him and send him away to boarding schools does not show that they have the best parenting philosophy. It shows that they are not supportive of Holden, simply because he is not quite as successful as his other two siblings. If his parents showed that they cared about him and supported him, I think it would be much easier for Holden to find success in school, and get along with people better in general. You stated that you think if Holden wants to get his life back on track, then he should fix things with his family, and I agree completely. I think if he lived at home for a while, instead of at another boarding school, he could patch things up with his parents, and get his life back to the way it should be.
