In today’s world, the rules of society have become more and
more strict. Back when our parents were growing up, the rules of society were
much looser than they are now. And in order to not seclude ourselves from
society, we must deal with its ways even if we disagree with them. In the book Catcher
in the Rye, the main character Holden has a problem with this. Holden
attends a boarding school that he is on the verge of getting kicked out of and
decides that leaving early and running away is the best solution to his
problems. Obviously this is not according to the rules of society. On his solo
journey, he gets caught up in the evil ways of underage drinking. Holden
clearly disagrees with the ways of society. He proclaims it throughout the
whole book. He hates that younger kids have to mature and lose their innocence
even though that’s what society suggests is the right thing to do. In my life
there are things in society that I think are wrong. To be honest, I think that
the public school system is somewhat distorted. Even though I think this, I
know that in order to grow up and be successful I have to attend and do well.
If I were not to follow the rules of society I think that I would end up
secluding myself from it.
This makes a lot of sense and is exactly what I was thinking. The rules of society were defiantly a lot looser when our parents were kids. Holden's mindset towards society is what leads him down this evil path that may seen right in his mind, but is actually completely wrong. How can someone not lose their innocence as they grow up? This is what Holden needs to realize; that he needs to grow up himself and stop acting like a selfish kid. There are some things wrong with society, but that does not mean you just ignore it all together. You can not ignore society because it effects everyone every day, and that is what Holden has to have to learn to live with. He just doesn't realize that he will not be a successful person if he just continues to ignore society, and act like its not there.
