Jake Whitney Week 6
The ways of society are set and no single man can alter them. When you do try and alter it, it just leads to endless frustration. We just have to deal with it. Holden was extremely frustrated with everything he deemed 'phony' and he ended up extremely isolated from society. It takes the effort of a group of people to change the ways a society thinks, interacts, and sometimes that doesn't work either. This could never be achieved by one man. I commend Holden for trying to alter society because a lot of things are truly wrong with it, but his methods and ideas were not the best either. It can also be argued that trying to change a system from within can never be achieved because it is not the system that we end up changing, it is the system that changes us. Therefore, if one wants to change a system, he is better off creating his own fresh, new system instead of trying to alter the one in place. The recent Occupy Wall Street is a good example of how change can never truly be achieved. Protestors are turning out in record numbers but few voices are being heard and even fewer demands being met. However noble the cause, OWS or any other group will never change a system, the system will change them.

I thouht him trying to be and stay himself was also worth some kind of pat on the back. But some of the things he was against were pointless in changing. Like people going to football games or even to the movies its something people do because they enjoy it mostly, not because they are some "phony" person. He thinks that anything people have in common they only do to be able to fit it.
