This rebellion makes him have depressing thoughts about being compared to his smart sister and brother. It results in him just not trying in school because he knows he will never be as good as his brother. Holden needs too stop comparing himself too his family members, because he is his own person and he downgrades on himself when he knows he won't ever be as smart as his family. I believe he would try a lot more in his education if he got the support that he needed from his family.

Rebellion Against Society by Tori DeSira
In the novel "Catchers in the rye" Holden rebels basically against his life he doesn't try hard at all in his schooling. He has failed out of four different schools because of his lack of care for his education. Holden comes against as a lazy guy because if he showed interest in anything he would succeed more in the things he does. Holden also rebels against his family by not trying in school because of his siblings being a lot smarter than him. Also by not keeping in contact with his family and not wanting too visit him, knowing that they will be mad for him leaving school and not succeeding in school.

I agree with you on the fact that Holden is trying to get attention from is parents however I feel that that is not the only reason why he rebels against society, I mean look at his view point of cars and how he would rather use a horse. I feel that he does not have that view point to get attention from his parents, Holden feels that way because he does not like to do the norm he likes to go against the grain. Another thing that shows he is not looking solely for attention from his parents is the fact that while he is at the schools wasting his time waiting to get kicked out he could still be friendly with others and try to make friends but yet that is the norm and expected out of people, and Holden does not like to do what is expected so he once again goes against the grain not looking solely for attention from his parents, but just to do the unexpected. I do still agree with you however he is looking for attention, but that is not his only reason for his rebellion.
