Speak AGAIN

Since the blog last week, my group has pretty much finished the book. There are still a few things we need to find out about Melinda, before the book ends. At first, we were getting teased when Melinda would not tell us what really happened to her the night of the party, even though everything she was saying, she was hinting at that she was raped. But still, she never actually said it. This past reading, we finally found out that the night of the party, Mel got really drunk, and got taken out in the woods and raped by this boy from her school named Andy, aka "IT."
Before Melinda ever worked up the guts to say anything, she had to hold in all of this depression brought on by this traumatizing night. The only outlet that Mel has had until this point, is her artwork, in Mr. Freeman's class. Mr. Freeman can tell that Melinda is hurt, depressed, and scared by the patterns of expression she puts into her artwork.
Melinda is sort of losing her newest and only friend, Heather, to a social group, called the Marthas. But, recently Mel has been into this extremely smart boy who is in a few of her classes, her biology lab partner, David Petrakis. They are kind of dating now, it's not official, but they are pretty much dating.
I hope that Melinda's parents come around, and start acting like a healthy married couple, for the sake of Melinda. Whether they realize it or not, they are hurting Melinda by their actions toward each other. If they do not start getting along like a married couple, I think it would be better if they just separated and got a divorce.

  1. Wow, Rachel no way I am reading speak as well. That's crazy and ironic that we are reading the exact same book. Anyways your post pretty much sums up the entire book. I don't know if you liked the book that much but I thought it was alright. Me partially knowing what happens at the end of the book probably doesn't help me like it more. There is actually a movie on this book if you didn't know. We could actually get together sometime and watch it if you'd like, maybe with some monstas or mickey D's diet cokes. Yes it should probably happen. Alright, well I am glad we're reading the same book, but were going to have to switch seats again at the end of this term..darn. Oh well, well I will see you tomorrow to discuss this book now that we've finished it and the ending was so shocking. Alright bye!

  2. I'm reading this book to Rach, wow! I don’t think I’m as far into the book as you are yet, so you kind of gave away a couple things to me but that’s okay. I think you point out a lot of good details though from the book. I like how you said that her only outlet right now for all of her emotions she keeps in is her art class, and that’s probably a main reason why she is doing so well in that class! I kind of learned that her parents don’t really have a good relationship and you can tell how it affects Melinda. I think that it would be a good thing for Melinda and David to start dating. She needs someone that she can talk to and be there for her. I just hope he doesn’t hurt her or take advantage of her. I don’t think he would though, he seems like a good guy! Alright well bye :]
