SPEAK! Post 7!

I chose the book speak because I thought it looked really interesting. Its an easy read and after reading about it online I figured it could be something I could relate to. The other books we read in class are hard for me to connect to because they're so old and not fun or interesting to me. The voice of the novel is the main character, Melinda. She is fun to listen/ read about because she is enthusiastic and my age. Also, since this novel takes place about a girl trying to fit in during high school it makes it more interesting for me considering I'm still in high school and have experienced most of all that high school drama! This novel is about a girl, Melinda, who is an outcast going into high school because of a mistake she made the past summer. She busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now all her old friends won't talk to her. She has found it safest to be alone. So far, high school has been a trouble for her. Also, since I'm only on page 40, I've made a few connections. It kind of reminds me of the past three books we've read in class because all the main characters in the past novel have been outcasts to the rest of society and so far, Melinda is an outsider to the rest of her high school. 1. Mace, its easy for me to relate to this post and understand it because i'm reading the same book! So far in the book, Melinda hasn't really talked much about what happened to her or why she acts the way she does and i think thats what keeps me so interested! I just want to know what happened and hear it from her! So far, i relate her most to Holden from the last novel we read because she is so opinionated and alone and isn't really accepted in society. I think this book is so interesting so far and i can't wait to keep reading!

  2. I'm also reading Speak, by Laurie Anderson, and I completely agree! The other books weren't that interesting and they were hard to relate to because of the topics and time period they were made in. However, when I read about Speak online I knew it would be a good, relatable book for me. The main character, Melinda, is a teenage girl who is still in high school, and is dealing with drama that comes with it, which makes the book interesting and keeps me reading. Out of all the books we have read, I think Speak relates the most to The Catcher in the Rye because Holden and Melinda are a lot alike in that they both struggle with putting forth effort in their grades, they both do not have many friends, and they do not have good relationships with their parents. Other than that, Speak does not highly relate to any of the other books we have read in class. So far I am happy with my choice of reading Speak. Whenever I pick it up, I do not dread reading it, I actually want to keep going. Melinda keeps me wondering when she does not tell the complete story of the night of the party, and who IT is and what they did to her. I can make assumptions, but I am not completely positive.
