During this week and next, Nic and I will be reading the book “Trigger” by Susan Vaught. Jersey Hatch, the main character, is a teenager who attempted to commit suicide with a gun. Miraculously, he survives through the injury and now has to deal with his weakened memory. He does not remember anything up to several months before he shot himself. The novel presents themes about loneliness and friendship which relates to the books we’ve been reading. I haven’t read too much into the novel yet but I predict that Jersey will start getting made fun of at school and possible lose some of the friends he had before the incident.
After reading the first few chapters I was able to compare Jersey Hatch with Charlie Gordon from “Flowers for Algernon.” Jersey forgets things and is a mentally challenged person. He only remembers things when he is sleeping. These physical experiences most closely relate to what Charlie experienced after he had the surgery.
I chose this book because it seemed like a unique story. In “Flowers for Algernon” I was fascinated to see Charlie progress so much in so little time. It is not something you normally see happen to someone. “Trigger” elicited somewhat of the same reaction from me because I was curious to see how someone would deal with having mentally disabled themselves. It is very rare for someone to survive a head wound like Jersey did which is why the book caught my attention.
Overall I’m glad I came across the book and I look forward to reading it.
i wouldn’t be able to read this book because suicide is so sad and it reminded me of scary movies which I'm not very fond of either. that would be really sad if you couldn’t remember anything but when you are sleeping you remember. but you cant remember when you wake up. I would not be able to deal with that at all. Hopefully this book ends happy and he doesn’t actually commit suicide and that his progress increases fast just like in Flowers for Algernon. Which was also a good book. All and all, this sounds like a very good book, and you seem to like it, i might go and read it but knowing me, I really do not like reading, so i probably wont read it... but i want to . lol . :)
