In the book Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger the main character Holden has a very rebellious attitude towards society, by not obeying laws by trying to drink under age , and school, by how he never puts forth any effort and is always getting in trouble and getting kicked out. I think Holden rebels against everything so he gets attention from his mother and his father, who sent him out to several boarding schools every couple of years or so where he never gets to see his parents and he doesn't get any attention from his mother or father. He is starting to get a reputation around the boarding schools as a sort of rebel, because everybody knows that he is always getting kicked out of school and is always failing his classes over and over again. I think that this is having a very negative effect on him, because this is making it harder for him to fit in with the rest of society in a normal way, because people usually try to stay out of trouble and if people hang out with him they may get into trouble and may fallow the wrong path and start acting like Holden and start failing classes.
Ty Rick I would agree with you on the fact that Holden is trying to get attention from is parents however I feel that that is not the only reason why he rebels against society, I mean look at his view point of cars and how he would rather use a horse. I feel that he does not have that view point to get attention from his parents, Holden feels that way because he does not like to do the norm he likes to go against the grain. Another thing that shows he is not looking solely for attention from his parents is the fact that while he is at the schools wasting his time waiting to get kicked out he could still be friendly with others and try to make friends but yet that is the norm and expected out of people, and Holden does not like to do what is expected so he once again goes against the grain not looking solely for attention from his parents, but just to do the unexpected. I do still agree with you however he is looking for attention, but that is not his only reason for his rebellion.

Hey Erikson. When you said that Holden is rebelling agaisnst society because he is trying to get attention from his mom and dad I agree with that. But I also think he is trying to get attention from everybody else too. He is so socially awkward and it causes him to not be able to sustain a normal conversation or to make any friends. He always criticizes people which doesnt allow people to like him. I also agree that his reputation of being a rebel and a person who doesnt care much about anything is making it hard for him to make friends. We know Holden wants to make friends because in the book he reaches out to people to talk to, but he never puts any effort or time into his relationships causing them to fall apart. If Holden wasn't so rebellious or stubborn then like you said his reputation would be better and maybe he would have a few friends to talk to.
ReplyDeleteTyler, I think Holden is a rebel too because he drinks under age when he knows hes not suppose too. I also agree that Holden rebels against everything so he gets attention from his mother and his father. I also agree that Holden is starting to get a reputation around all the boarding schools as a sort of rebel, because everybody knows that he is always getting kicked out of school and is always failing his classes over and over again. I agree that he is a rebel too because he has a very rebellious attitude towards society, by not obeying laws, and school, by how he never puts forth any effort and is always getting in trouble and getting kicked out. I think he does this because he wants attention and he has no friends so he wants to be different. This is why I agree that Holden is Rebellious.
