Week 6, Tyler E. Time to Grow up

Everybody has to grow up some time in their life, its just a part of life and something people have to do. In this book Holden refuses to grow up, he's the same kid he's always been according to his friend from his boarding school Old Luce who talks to Holden and tells him that he refuses to have the same old conversations that they use to have back at boarding school. Holden also refuses to grow up and actually try in school after everything he's been through, getting kicked out of school after school and after he gets chewed out by his parents time and time again, he still refuses to commit to learning and focusing on passing his school classes even after being sent to a rehab like place that tries to get him to commit to his schooling. Everybody grows up it just a natural part of life that comes with age. Kids that acted immature in grades like 5th and 6th grade usually act a lot more mature by the time senior year of high school roll around. If you don't mature you'll have trouble in relationships and in work environments, just like in movies when immature guys are never taken seriously by women, other guys, or their co-workers.

  1. I agree Tyler. It’s almost like Holden wants to try to go his own way and do his own thing in attempts to prove people wrong and be successful by himself. He doesn’t know what he’s doing though and he is doing all of the wrong things. Running away from his problems, going against society and getting into illegal things aren’t going to get him anywhere. He’s very immature, you’re right, and he doesn’t make any effort to grow up. He doesn’t really care about anything, that’s why he flunked out of school and has a poor relationship with his family. He needs to get back on track and try grow up if he wants to be successful.

  2. tyler some people never grow up like michel jackson he wanted to be a boy forever. haha just kiddin' i think most people do grow up just some later than others. holden is one of those people who doesnt want to grow up and people think he is crazy for it and eventually he does too. but holden is confused about alot of stuff and you can see as the book goes on the he attemps a few times to act mature but he ends up just failing at it. he doesnt seem to care that he does either and he thinks that knowing about sex will make him be grown up but it doesnt.

  3. Holden is a rebel of society and I agree, he needs to grow up. Not trying in school is only going to come back and haunt him later in life when he is jobless and has no education because he has been kicked out of every school hes sent to. A majority of the kids who act immature in early middle school, do turn out to be decently mature adolescents by the time high school is finished. The only "attempt" Holden makes to grow up is trying to learn about sex, when in fact this wont even make him any more mature.

  4. Hey, what's up Tyler.
I also agree with your post, that Holden has to grow up. He just doesn't know how to be mature and that is a good point you made. In the novel, it proves that Holden isn't really growing up or maturing when he has a drink with Luce. His old friend, Luce, notices that he is the same old Holden from boarding school talking about the same old things. I believe Holden brings it upon himself by not caring about anything. By not caring about anything he is acting immature. For example, when he doesn't care about school, it leads to him getting kicked out of Pencey, which get his parents pissed at him. Holden just needs to try in life and this will get his life back on track as well. He needs to learn how to grow up and take responsibility for his own actions.

  5. Tyler, I agree that everybody sometime has to grow up. I agree that Holden refuses to grow up and that he's the same kid he's always been according to his friend from his boarding school, Old Luce. I also agree that Holden refuses to grow up and actually try in school after everything he's been through, getting kicked out of school. I disagree that Everybody grows up it just a natural part of life that comes with age. I disagree with this statement because some older people never grow up. I also disagree that Kids that acted immature in grades like 5th and 6th grade usually act a lot more mature by the time senior year of high school rolls around. Because I know many kids in our grade that act really immature. I also agree that the only "attempt" Holden makes to grow up is trying to learn about sex.
