Week 8, Troy Schott

I just finished up my novel last night, I am Legend, by Robert Matheson. I really enjoyed the book, and thought it was a very interesting story. However, it was not at all like the movie, like I had expected it to be when I began reading. The only similarity is that Robert Neville is left in a world alone, the last human on earth; except, that’s not even true in the movie. So the plot is similar, but nothing really beyond that is the same between the book and movie. The main theme of the book is that “normalcy” is simply determined by the majority. Robert Neville’s role as the “normal” human and the “different” vampires are completely reversed; when Neville is captured, the vampire society that captures him now views him with fear because he is different. The book really makes you think twice the next time you just someone or something as unusual as different, as you have to see it from their perspective. The main connection I made between this book and the books we read in class is that Robert Neville and Holden Caulfield both live in a secluded world. However, Holden pushes away other people while Neville embraces any interaction he can with other organisms, dog or human.

  1. What's up Troy Schott.
I completely agree with you Troy Schott in regards to the ending and the overall theme of the book. In the book, Neville is the lone survivor of the human race. He thinks he is the normal one among the living dead that is the vampires. However, at the end of the book he is captured by the newly evolved vampires who are establishing their society. He learns that he is captured to be executed in front of the entire vampire race because they want his life. Neville killed many vampires and became feared by the vampires which were the majority. He learned that he was the abnormal one simply because he wasn’t apart of the majority. The connection I made to the novels was the Neville had to cope with the deaths of his wife, Virginia, and his daughter, Kathy. Likewise, Holden, had to cope with the death of his brother, allie.

  2. I can agree with the both of you as I have also read the book, and can connect with you guys. I thought it was very interesting the way it ended because Robert did become one of the outcast that everyone wanted dead. Which brought him to the conclusion that he was a legend, and that was very true. Between Robert Neville and Holden, they are exact opposites like you said troy. Robert literarily lived in a secluded world, but I don't think Holden did. This is where I disagree with you Troy because Holden lived in a world that could embrace him at any moment, but he did not want to become part of society. On the other hand, Neville didn't even have a choice to be secluded.
