I don't think Holden is not necessarily rebelling against much. I think he is just doing his own thing. I guess you could say that failing out of multiple schools is a sign of some sort of rebellion, but I think its more of him making a personal statement, saying that that is not the kind of life he wants to be living. But I also think he does not know what kind of life he wants to live. So that is probably why it he comes of so rebellious!
The effect it has on him is that it makes people not what to be around him. His failing and not caring and compulsive lying really push people away. I am not going to call it rebellion but I will call it his other problems. Those problems keep him isolated, and until he fixes that no one will want to be on a personal level with him.
Also, you might say that he is rebelling by drinking and smoking and etc, but really things like that were some what accepted back in his time. so it was not a form of rebellion to him just a means of relaxation!
His problems effecting society doesn't seem very likely. Maybe his compulsive lying might get him in trouble IN society, but I am not too sure if his problems really can be making a raucous on society.
