Holdens a Rebel
In the book Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden is very rebellious. He goes against many laws like the drinking age law. Holden drinks all the time when he goes out and tries to meet new people. He knows that the drinking law is 21 and he is sixteen but he does it anyway. Also Holden lies a lot which is rebellious. He lies a lot about his age and where he lives. He also gets enjoyment out of lying which is not a good thing. Also Holden is very rebellious to the laws because he participated in prostitution. Even though he didn’t do anything with the prostitute, he was going to participate in it at first but he just ended up talking to her. Holden is also rebellious because he got kicked out of Pencey hall for not keeping his grades up. Also when he got kicked out he never told his parents and when he was at Pencey Hall, he didn’t follow any rules. He started fights like with Straudsburg and was really mean to Ankley numerous times. Holden is a very bad kid trying to rebel against his parents and the law. This is why Holden's a rebel.

I agree with u when you say that he knows that he is not old enough to drink. Although I do disagree with it at the same time. He rarely gets a drink when he tries too. The server usually asks him for some I.D. and he ends up getting a coke. You also say that he loves to lie, but the only reason why he lies is because he is a compulsive liar so he can no really help it. He doesn’t always enjoy when he lies because when he was in the sub way he is sad that he lied to that lady. Although you do have a huge point in that he doesn’t tell his parents about getting kicked out and even getting kicked out period. I do not think Holden is a bad kid by its not only his fault, but it is also his parents for not teaching him right from wrong and how to be a good person.
ReplyDeleteHolden is a rebel and just because doesnt conform to soceity and does got with the crowed doesn't make him a rebel. holden does disobey many laws such as the drinking age and how he smokes cigs. But what teenage kid doesn't? Its just part of growing up and experimenting. 9 out of 10 people have drank well before they turned 21 and that really doesn't make you rebellious. Bracking laws doesnt make you badrebellious or anot rebel. Laws aredoesnt made toit be broke. What makes holden a rebel is his outlook on life and his attuide towards everyone and everything in it. Yes he does fit the bad boy aspect of rebel but u have to have the outlook to. So in the end the his personality determined if he was one or not.
ReplyDeleteYeah Nate I have to agree with Mark when he says that although he tries to get drinks he rarely gets them, but your right when you say that he is always trying to get drinks or he always talks about drinking where ever he goes, from being on the train to being at a hotel in New York City. He is a compulsive liar so you can't really blame him, but I think that he sometimes does it for fun just to laugh at people when they believe his lies and feed into the lies. The point about prostitution is also a very good point about him being a rebel and not obeying the laws. Your right about how he doesn't even tell his parents about getting in trouble, but how long is he going to keep it a secrete eventually his parents are going to find out for there isn't a point to doing it. He never does what he is supposed to do in school, like do home work and try hard, but I feel that that is more of him just being lazing and having a lack of motovation.
