week #5 :) amanda b
Holdens life is ful of lonelyness. I feel he does it to him self. Its not that he needs to be like everyone else. Any one can be who they want and can be as different as they want; its good to have veriety. But every one is different and not very many people are lonely. If he would go to the football games it would give him a chance to make a friend or two because you can talk to people and you can be around people. Its his choice to be lonely. Yes his brother died and hes sad about it but it shouldnt be a reason why hes lonely. He has other options and ways to not be lonely. Ackley isnt the person Holden really wants as a friend but Ackley cares about Holden and thinks of him as a really good friend. So Holden isnt exactly lonely. I feel the theme is that you can be lonley but you should blame no one but yourself. yes it is sad but you have oportunitys that are always given to you to be involved in a group of friends or a organization or like a friday night football game with pleny of people to be come friends with. Or maybe the theme is its easy to get sucked into lonelyness and so dont get sucked in. if that makes any sence. :)

Amanda,
ReplyDeleteHolden does experience al lot loneliness in the novel. I agree he does it to him self because he chooses too not try in his schooling. By failing out of four different schools is a bad thing too do to let happen to himself. Your right when you talk about how everyone is different and no ones the same because Holden really downgrades on himself because he compares himself too his family. With his siblings being a lot smarter than him he feels depressed too not be as smart as his younger sister.
When he chooses what to do with his life and what friends he makes it was his decision too not make good friends with his roommates he caused the fights with them that made him not well liked there.
I agree with your theme it is well said and explained, because you do choose what you want too happen and no one influences your life but yourself. So i thought that was a good idea too add a good theme about the novel.
Holden is lonely for many reasons you said and i completely agree with you that he has the choice to be lonely or not. Holden has so many chances to make friends and get to know people but he chooses to not make friends or meet new people. like you said he could have gone to the football game and talked to people and by going to that he could have made new friends but instead he choose to go back to his dorm and read a book. Holden should understand that everyone is different and that he shouldn't compare himself to his family just cause everyone is different.because his family is smarter than he is he feels depressed and that makes him not want to try. When Holden got in the fight with stradlater he was the one that caused it and so to me he is making the choice not to make new friends so he shouldn't blame anybody but himself.
